Splice becomes highest-grossing Canadian film of the year




The genetic sci-fi thriller Splice has passed the $2 million mark at the Canadian box office to become the highest grossing Canadian film this year.

Thus far, the film has grossed $2,064,788.

The Canada-France coproduction, shot in Ontario and directed by Vincenzo Natali, stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as genetic engineers who secretly use human DNA in a hybrid experiment that results in the creation of an intelligent being.

Another Canadian film managed to crack the Canadian box office top 10 this week. Piché: Entre ciel et terre is a biopic about an Air Transat pilot, Robert Piché, who became a hero after successfully landing a plane suffering from double-engine failure on a flight from Toronto to Lisbon, Portugal. Although he saved the lives of 306 passengers and crew members, his past convinction as a drug smuggler was later exposed by the media.

The film drew $566,944 after opening on Wednesday, July 7 in Quebec. While competing against Hollywood fare, it charted at number eight on the Canadian box office results for the July 9 weekend.
