Zac Efron has reportedly become close friends with Tom Cruise.

The actor - who previously revealed that he received motorcycle riding lessons from Cruise - is said to talk on the phone often with the Knight and Day star.

“Tom and Zac clicked the minute they met. Since then, the two stars have talked by phone several times a week," a source told the National Enquirer.

"Zac is hungry to make the transition from teenage idol to movie superstar – and he’s using Tom’s career as a template for success. And Tom’s using Zac because he’s desperate to connect with a younger audience."

Oksana: There are 30 more tapes!

What can those folks expect from Gibson's amazingly talented mouth in coming weeks? Well...according to EOnline and RadarOnline, it seems like there's 30 more tapes that Oksana had recorded and has yet to be released! So there will be more tapes leaking in the coming weeks!

We already know about the very latest Gibson rant, a sort of marathon that—reportedly—involved 30 calls to Grigorieva in a single night. (RadarOnline has all the nastiest bits up on its site, along with all the other tirades thus far.) But don't be shocked if there's still more to come.

The only way Lindsay Lohan's going to lose her weave at this point is if she's involved in one of those women's prison exercise-yard fights.

But in case you were wondering why the actress was allowed to be locked up with her hair extensions intact, while jailhouse rules mandate that no detachable locks are allowed, we have the answer for you.

"They are sewn into her scalp and are bonded by glue so anybody like that—and there are women who come in with those type of hair extensions—we don't remove them," L.A. County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore tells E! News.

"There is no reason to do it. We only take them off if they snap off or if it is a wig."

Otherwise, her "hair" would have been confiscated along with the rest of her personal items (money, sunglasses, etc.) when she surrendered.

Meanwhile, breaking up the monotony of her day Tuesday was Lohan's Inferno costar Jason Dottley, who told E! News after visiting the starlet that he was "petrified just being in the facility."

"I can't imagine that anyone in jail could be doing ‘well,'" he said, calling Lohan's surroundings "heartbreaking." But "Lindsay will come out of this stronger than before, and I can't wait for her to prove to the world that her talent will prevail and that her day in Hollywood has yet to come."

Well, the makers of Inferno certainly hope so.

According to Century Regional Detention Facility's visitation rules, Lohan's only allowed two half-hour visits from friends or family per weekend (or, in her case, per week). And since Dina and Ali Lohan have already made their weekly pilgrimage, apparently Lindsay's done receiving guests who aren't her lawyer for the rest of her stay.

Officials have maintained throughout Lohan's jail time, which could end as early as Sunday, that she has not been given preferential treatment.

When it comes to a male actor deciding to come out of the closet, the conventional wisdom is that it will ruin his chances of ever being a big movie star – especially if he wants those coveted romantic leading men roles.
If the audience knows the guy is gay, apparently it will kill the fantasy and no one will want to buy tickets.
We hear it time and time again from the Hollywood power players and creative folks – both gay and straight – and we heard it again over the weekend at the Outfest Film Festival during a panel called Coming Out in Hollywood.
You wonder though, how do they know? Has it ever been tested? Have we ever had a major studio film flop because an openly gay actor had the romantic lead role?

I’d love to see , for example, what would have happened if the red-hot Neil Patrick Harris had the Tom Cruise role in Knight & Day. Might it have made more than the paltry $70 million it has taken in so far domestically?
Maybe. Maybe not.
We don’t know because it has never really been tried as far as I know.
But it’s hard to change things when an openly gay writer-director such as Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex, Bounce, Happy Endings) has issues with gays playing straight and vice-versa.
“I think the relationship between an audience and an actor is a very complicated thing, especially in a romantic lead,” Roos said during the panel discussion. “When you’re in a movie theater, what’s on the screen isn’t necessarily appealing to your best instincts. Most of the audience is going to be homophobic, they’re mostly violent in their hearts and that’s what they’re responding to on the screen and you can’t wait to have a career until the audience is not homophobic. That’s never going to happen. … In a romantic role, it can be very distracting for the audience to not be able to give themselves to a particular character. Like when I was watching Philadelphia — I knew [Tom Hanks] was straight.”



Roos has directed such actors as Ben Affleck, Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tom Arnold, Lisa Kudrow, Christina Ricci, Lyle Lovett, Jason Ritter, Laura Dern and several other people who are quite well-known, not exactly blank slates in the minds of the public.
It makes me wonder if knowing that Affleck and Paltrow are straight was a distraction in Bounce.
“I think everybody should be out to their circle but it’s more difficult if you’re a romantic lead,” Roos said at the Outfest event. “It would be hard for me to cast Natalie Portman as a woman rancher because she’s this crazy vegan. I want to not have conversations about is he gay or is he not gay; I want to know as little as possible.”

I wanted to publicly ask Roos to expand on this topic but could not manage to get called on by the moderator.

So I talked to Don face-to-face after the panel and we started by talking about his problems with Hanks and his Oscar-winning performance as a gay man with AIDS fighting being fired from his job in 1993′s Philadelphia.
“I kept feeling distracted knowing that he wasn’t really gay,” Roos told me. “I was admiring him and thinking, ‘Oh my God, how well he’s playing that.’ The more I know about any actor about anything, the more distracting it is.”
“I’m just saying in general, the more I know about an actor and his personal life and his personal beliefs, the less useful it is to me as a director. Sometimes I’m distracted because I’m mad that it isn’t a gay actor playing that role. Whatever your political thing is, it interferes with the storytelling.”
More specifically, if an actor were gay in a straight role, he admits he might be similarly distracted. But then he said: “I saw Sean [Hayes] on Broadway [in Promises, Promises] and the only distraction was that I sometimes saw the character that he played on Will & Grace but I totally bought him as a straight guy.”

Now I was really confused and asked: “Would you cast an openly gay actor as a romantic lead in a straight role? Would you be the one to do it?”
Roos: “That’s hypothetical. It would really depend.”
“Cheyenne Jackson?” I suggested.
Roos: “I would have to know what the part is.”
So he’s open to it?
“Oh, I’m open to it, absolutely. What I’m talking about in a more general sense is only romantic leads. That’s a relationship they can have with the audience that it’s distracting whatever they know about you.”
He’s still got the romantic leading man block but, thankfully, he is not willing to make some kind of blanket rule about not casting gays as straight and straight as gay.
“As a director, as a casting person … if someone comes in and you fall in love with them, you don’t care anything about them … if they embody what your vision is, you go for them. … I think sometimes it’s a little hurdle for the audience but if I love the guy, I’m willing to take my chances. My films are all very counter-culture films anyway, it doesn’t really matter in my world.”

Much more clear during the panel were the feelings of openly gay actor Jonathan Slavin who most recently was a regular on the ABC sitcom Better off Ted. He thinks it is time for someone in a position of power to make the leap of casting a gay actor in a major movie lead.
“Don’t you think that there were people who said to Sidney Poitier that an audience is never going to accept a black man as the lead of a film?” he said during the panel. “At a certain point, you have to just cast (gay actors) and grab the reins and move forward and see what happens. It is about taking risks and taking risks and not waiting until it’s safe. We’re accommodating a narrow-minded mentality. "

Our jailhouse mole tells TMZ Turkey Tetrazzini is on the menu tonight. Actually, it's the only option. For those who aren't familiar, it's a turkey casserole with noodles, mushrooms and cream sauce.

And there are sides -- Applesauce, broccoli coleslaw and wheat bread. And there's also milk to wash it all down.

At the end of 'Inception,' Cobb was: Awake or Dreaming?

Pretty sure the headline makes it clear enough, but I’m gonna go ahead and slap a big ol’ SPOILER ALERT on this one anyway, because some people are too busy to actually read headlines. But yes, for those who haven’t seen Inception yet: First off, do so, because it’s a blast and definitely a “worth seeing in the theaters” pic with all the collapsing cities-type effects and such. Secondly, avert your eye, because I wanna talk about that last scene.

My first reaction when the movie ended and that damn top was still spinning was a chuckle (most every one else in my theater seemed to prefer a groan). What a pain in the ass, I thought lovingly of director Chris Nolan, for teasing us. I mean, OF COURSE Leo’s character got home. He woke up on the plane with the rest of the gang, went through customs, got to the house, and the kids finally turned around – something that did not, seemingly COULD not happen in his dreams. Ever. So what if the top kept spinning. It was just Nolan having a little fun with us. It even started to wobble there at the end, right? It was just a matter of time, a technicality. It probably fell the moment the screen went black.

But as I got up to leave the theater, I realized I wasn’t going to be able to stick with that explanation for long. Because it DIDN’T fall before the screen went black. We never saw it topple. It was still spinning, so there is no way we know for certain it was reality and not Cobb stuck in a new dimension of his subconscious, this time not with Mal but with his smiling kids. In retrospect, the final minutes wrapped up really quickly and perfectly. After the moment of tension at the first customs stop, Cobb breezed through the rest of the airport, met up with Miles who, without much chit-chat at all, led him straight to the kids, who were outside playing in the same position as in the dreams (Were they also wearing the same clothes as in the dreams? Were they the same age? How long had he been away?), and quickly turned around and jumped up into their daddy’s arms. Sure, it could’ve just been a tidy dénouement. No real dialogue or additional tension was required. Saito put in the call as he said he would, Miles was notified to pick up Cobb at the airport, done and done. But still, I kept thinking, as I walked out of that theater, that it all seemed a lot like a “dream come true,” devoid of any of the nuance and hiccups that clog up reality.

What’s more, Cobb didn’t even wait around to see for himself if his totem would fall. He rushed off to be with the kids. It was as if he didn’t care — he wanted to live that reality whether in dream or consciousness. Maybe he came back 10 minutes later and spun it again. And maybe it fell. Or maybe there’s a sequel coming.

I loved this movie with or without that final wrinkle. That top could’ve fallen the split second before the screen went to black and I’d have been just as happy with it. Yet, I can’t help but obsess over the fact that it was a mystery left for us to discuss. So PopWatchers, over to you: Was Cobb dreaming or did he finally find a way home?

Bieber tweeted a thank you to "Beliebers" and said the video's success was "crazy." The singer wrote: "I started on youtube so ... WOW!"

Bieber's video and Lady Gaga's switched positions briefly Friday, but as of late afternoon, Bieber was ahead by more than 600,000 views.

Mel Gibson tape 5 Leaks!

Ugh, now there are five. You can spend nearly 30 minutes listening to five separate recordings of Mel Gibson purportedly raging against ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva on Radar Online. It’s almost like Radar isn’t even a proper noun anymore — this is literally the radar. “What’s on the Radar today? Another Mel Gibson tape, of course.”

Radar’s decision to release these one-by-one seems increasingly bizarre. (An editor for the site claims that the audio came from a third party, not Grigorieva herself.) It’s beginning to feel like a record company “dropping” albums. Vol. 1: The N Word, Vol. 2: A Time to Kill, Vol. 3: The Nanny Diaries, Vol. 4: Burning Down the House, and now Vol. 5: Gold Digger. I’m not trying to be flip but to make the point that this step-by-step rollout seems more like the work of a publicist for a mysterious entertainer. The saddest part is, if you’re still listening, fatigue is likely setting in, and the impact is lessening. The tapes are still in every way terrible, but due to the sheer repetition, they’re also becoming sort of mundane. You can’t help but become desensitized to something that happens every day. And unfortunately, the public’s chief reaction to these tapes is shifting from disbelief a couple days ago over the horrible content to disbelief today that there’s ANOTHER one???

BREAKING NEWS: LINDSAY ENTERS REHAB!

Lindsay Lohan is apparently trying to blunt her 90 day jail sentence by moving in to a sober living house.

Lohan was spotted entering a facility in West Hollywood yesterday afternoon. Lohan's mother, sister and Sam Ronson were seen at the facility later that day.

As we first reported, attorney Robert Shapiro has been hired to help Lindsay either reduce or eliminate her jail sentence.

TMZ broke the story ... Shapiro is trying to push rehab immediately hoping it will satisfy Judge Marsha Revel.

Part of Lindsay's sentence was to check into rehab for 90 days after serving the jail time, but this appears to be an example of putting the cart before the horse.

UPDATE #4:

Apparently it has been confirmed (?) that Lindsay Lohan spent her first night in rehab last night -- at attorney Robert Shapiro's rehabilitation facility Pickford Lofts. The sober living house was started by the famed OJ Simpson attorney after he lost his son Brent to the disease of chemical dependence in 2005.

Lindsay was visited yesterday by her mom Dina, sister Ali, her ex Samantha Ronson, her assistant Eleanor, and her rumored-to-be new girlfriend Eilat Anschel. Eleanor brought in pillows and bags from Blick art supply, a case of Sprite and toilet paper. Sam showed up around 10 pm and stayed for 45 minutes.

Her evaluation in rehab may influence the date she will have to serve her sentence in jail (currently July 20) and for how long she will have to do it (currently 90 days). There are a lot of factors that can now influence her current jail sentence in case they prove jail is not good for her health problems and for her to get better.

UPDATE #5: Lindsay Lohan: Late Night Rehab Visit

It appears Lindsay Lohan made a late night visit to a rehab facility in Los Angeles.

Hollywood.tv has footage of the troubled starlet's mother, Dina Lohan, an assistant and friend Samantha Ronson. According to the photo agency, Lindsay was already at the facility when her friends and family arrived carrying food, pillows, blankets and laptops.

The sober living facility is owned by high-profile attorney Robert Shapiro.

Will Britney Spears help Mel Gibson as he helped her?

When Britney Spears was in the midst of a mental breakdown in May 2008, a few months after she was hospitalized on psychiatric hold, Mel Gibson was one of the few celebrities who reached out and tried to guide the pop princess on the road to recovery.



Gibson and his then-wife Robin took Spears and her father Jamie for a recuperating getaway to their home in Costa Rica, and prior to that, the “What Women Want” star was spotted dining with Spears at a Russian restaurant in Studio City.

The two stars were neighbors back when the pop princess lived in Malibu, Calif. and Gibson felt it necessary to do all he could to assist her.

So now that the tables have turned, might Spears, 28, return the favor, as she is successfully moving forward with her life while Gibson’s seems to be falling apart?

A rep for Spears did not respond for comment, and sources close to her told Pop Tarts that she is yet to make mention of the current Mel Gibson controversy, centered on a string of leaked tapes in which the actor embarks on profanity-driven, racist, sexist, and threatening rhapsodies toward his former flame, Oksana Grigorieva.

But Gibson can go to sleep at night knowing at least one high-profile person has his back.

On Tuesday Whoopi Goldberg defended the controversial actor’s use of the “N word” and insisted that she has known him a long time and that he isn’t racist. And although Goldberg also referred to Gibson as her “friend,” perhaps he doesn’t quite reciprocate the feelings.

“That’s why I’m so f***ing angry, because I don’t have any friends,” Gibson screamed through the phone to Grigorieva in one of the leaked tapes. “I tried to make one in you, and you treat me like s**t."

"So You Think You Can Dance" is racking up the injuries, and Ashley Galvan is the latest casualty, sitting out from the Wednesday, July 14 performance show.

With the opening sequence done, it's apparent that only six of the Top 7 dancers are present.

Host Cat Deeley informs the audience that after Galvan's rehearsals on Monday (July 12), she was experiencing severe rib pains and that doctors advised her not to dance this week. She was scheduled to dance with all-star Pasha Kovalev and fellow contestant Robert Roldan.

As with Alex Wong the week before who was also sidelined with an injury, she'll be automatically placed in the Bottom 3. If an injury is so severe that a dancer needs more than a week off, they'll have to leave the show.

Let's review. All-star Allison Holker had to sit out one week for a floating rib injury, but returned to work. Wong's Achilles tendon ruptured, and thus he had to be eliminated. He underwent surgery Monday and in a video, thanks the fans for his support.

We'd hate for Galvan to be out of the running. Not only has she been dancing excellently, but she's only one of two girls left.

With the injuries piling up, maybe it's time to reevaluate the toll this show takes on the dancers. Learning two or more routines a week in different genres that one's body may not be used to could just be too difficult.

Plagiarism lawsuita against Harry Potter

A plagiarism lawsuit against Harry Potter author Jk Rowling has been extended to include the American publishers of the wizard books.

Representatives for late writer Adrian Jacobs' estate filed papers last year alleging the author approached Rowling's UK publishers Bloomsbury in 1987, ten years before his death, and unsuccessfully attempted to sell them his Willy The Wizard stories.
The lawsuit claims Rowling's 2000 book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, bears a resemblance to segments of Jacobs' novel The Adventures of Willy the Wizard - No 1 Livid Land.
And the case has now been extended to the US - the writer's estate filed another copyright infringement lawsuit on Tuesday in a New York federal court against the book's Stateside publishing house Scholastic Inc.
The trustees are calling for the firm to recall all copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and pay Jacobs' estate all profit derived from its sale.
Spokesperson Kyle Good, from Scholastic Inc., says, "We have not been served yet, and we wouldn't comment on pending litigation."
Rowling has previously slammed the initial lawsuit, branding it "absurd".

Appeals Court Strikes Down Indecency Rule

A United States appeals court tossed out the indecency policy of the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday, calling it a violation of the First Amendment.

An appeals panel said the F.C.C. policy was “unconstitutionally vague, creating a chilling effect that goes far beyond the fleeting expletives at issue here.”

The ruling was immediately characterized as a victory for big broadcasters like ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, which have been fighting the indecency policy for years.

Tuesday’s ruling vacates a 2004 decision by the Bush administration F.C.C. to step up enforcement of the indecency policy on the broadcast airwaves. Earlier that year, the singer Janet Jackson’s breast was bared during the Super Bowl halftime show on CBS, reigniting a decades-old debate about broadcast standards.

But Tuesday’s ruling deals more specifically with the F.C.C. policy toward so-called fleeting expletives. After several curse words were uttered during awards shows in 2002 and 2003, the F.C.C. concluded that a single use of an expletive “could be actionably indecent,” triggering fines against broadcasters.

Also in 2004, Congress said that the F.C.C. could fine stations up to $325,000 for each instance of indecent speech, substantially raising the penalties for a profanity that was not bleeped.

On Tuesday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York found that the policy toward fleeting expletives effectively chills speech in part “because broadcasters have no way of knowing what the F.C.C. will find offensive.”

In a statement, Fox Broadcasting said it was extremely pleased by Tuesday’s decision. “We have always felt that the government’s position on fleeting expletives was unconstitutional,” said the company, a unit of the News Corporation. “While we will continue to strive to eliminate expletives from live broadcasts, the inherent challenges broadcasters face with live television, coupled with the human element required for monitoring, must allow for the unfortunate isolated instances where inappropriate language slips through.”

Other major broadcasters echoed Fox’s comments in private, but declined to comment on the record.

“The score for today’s game is First Amendment 1, censorship 0,” Andrew Jay Schwartzman, senior vice president for the nonprofit Media Access Project, said in a statement.

The group was among those that opposed the rules and claimed that they “interfere with the creative process.”

“Today’s decision vindicates that argument,” Mr. Schwartzman’s statement said. “The next stop is the Supreme Court, and we’re confident that the justices will affirm this decision.”
